PCAN Conference
Royal Society, 2023

Like many people I have been on a learning journey over the last 30 years, as we have become more aware of the issue of climate change and the impact it will have, and is already having on our earth systems.

In the late 1990’s, working in industry, I was experimenting with biomaterials to replace plastics. I moved to the public sector to work on strategic resource planning, then went on to support more than 20,000 SMEs on business sustainability. By 2006 I co-led the South East Sustainable Business Programme, developing SEEDA's Sustainable Business Strategy and Low Carbon Footprint Action Plan. Wanting to understand more about the work we were undertaking I juggled work and a Masters in Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey. A few years later I completed a PhD – this time as a full time student!

In the last few years, I have used the skills developed through all of my work, both in the commercial and public sectors to balance my time between academic and consultancy based projects.

I have supported the development of a fantastic new Climate and Sustainability Commission in Derry and Strabane, undertaken carbon footprints of Surrey for the Surrey Climate commission and worked on a multi-site carbon assessment for York Minster. I remain fascinated with how we communicate action across multiple levels of governance, whether this is across organisational supply chains or levels of government. This comes through in recent work with the University of Bath, where we looked at the emerging market supporting SMEs to decarbonise and in work with LETI to support embodied carbon through procurement.

I am skilled in taking complex ideas and problems and bringing them to a understandable and local level, inspiring and involving communities and organisations to think about climate issues and actions.

I am a member of the London Energy Transformation Initiative (LETI), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Manufacturing (FRSA), and a Practitioner Member of ISEP.
